A software or code audit isn’t just a technical exercise—it’s a strategic investment. It uncovers hidden risks, improves system performance, and enhances confidence in your technology.

The post Software Audits — and Why You Should Get One first appeared on STEP Software.

In today’s complex technology landscape, organizations rely on countless software systems—some developed in-house, others bought or integrated over time. Software is rarely a one and done situation and unless you are doing deep audits of your tech stack regularly an organization has no way of knowing if they are at risk. Knowing how secure, efficient, and compliant your software is, quality code that is valuable intellectual property are only a few benefits of a software audit. In the time of cybercrime and malicious actors proactive auditing is your best safety net to keeping your business safe.

Whether you’re a growing tech company, a heavily regulated enterprise, or a business preparing for acquisition, a software audit offers deep insight into the quality, security, and compliance of your digital assets. The first step to ensuring your tech stack is secure is understanding what an audit is, why you need it and how to get them done.

Why Do Organizations Need a Software or Code Audit?

There are several strategic, legal, and operational reasons to conduct a software or code audit:

1. Security Assurance

Audits help uncover vulnerabilities that could be exploited, especially in legacy systems or custom applications. This is essential for avoiding breaches and data loss.

2. Quality & Technical Debt Assessment

Audits surface issues like outdated frameworks, complex logic, and spaghetti code—providing a roadmap for modernization and refactoring.

3. License & IP Compliance

Using open-source or third-party code without proper licensing can expose companies to legal risks. An audit ensures compliance and protects intellectual property.

4. M&A Due Diligence

In mergers and acquisitions, a thorough audit ensures that the software being acquired is stable, maintainable, and free of legal or security risks.

5. Performance Optimization

An audit can highlight inefficient algorithms, poor database queries, or infrastructure bottlenecks—allowing for tuning and optimization. An audit can also help uncover inefficiencies within your cloud-based networks.

6. Regulatory Compliance

Companies operating withing sectors like finance, healthcare, and defense require software to meet strict regulatory standards, this includes third party companies who sell their software into these sectors. An audit ensures systems are compliant with those frameworks.

Software Audit or Code Audit?

A software audit is a comprehensive examination of software systems, codebases, licenses, architecture, and documentation. Its purpose is to assess whether your software meets business, legal, and technical standards—and to identify risks or inefficiencies.

This process might include evaluating:

Software architecture and system design

Code quality and maintainability

Licensing and intellectual property compliance

Security vulnerabilities and exposure

Performance and scalability

Regulatory and industry compliance (e.g., PCI, ADA, AODA, GDPR)

Software audits can be broad or targeted depending on business needs.

A code audit is a focused subset of a software audit, specifically reviewing the source code of an application. It’s usually performed to assess:

Code readability and documentation

Adherence to coding standards

Bug-prone logic or poor architecture

Security flaws and potential backdoors for attacks

Dependencies and outdated libraries

Code audits are typically done during major releases, prior to mergers, or when adopting third-party software to ensure compatibility, quality, security, and maintainability.

Internal vs. Third-Party Audits: What’s Better?

Both internal and external audits have merit—but they serve different purposes.

Internal Audits

Pros:

Familiarity with systems and history

Lower immediate cost

Can be iterative and ongoing

Cons:

Potential bias or blind spots

Limited expertise in security or licensing law

Not always seen as credible by external stakeholders

May lack a deep understanding of legacy software necessary for a thorough audit

Internal audits are useful for regular check-ins or continuous code quality initiatives.

Third-Party Audits

Pros:

Objective and unbiased assessment

Deeper domain expertise (e.g., security, compliance, open-source licensing)

High credibility—especially for investors, partners, or regulators

Ability to benchmark against industry standards

Cons:

Higher cost

May require onboarding or access to sensitive systems

In critical situations—like a major funding round, security incident, compliance audit, or acquisition—third-party audits are often essential. They offer independent validation and help organizations make high-stakes decisions with confidence.

Different Types of Software Audits and Their Purpose

Depending on your needs, software audits come in various forms:

Audit Type

Purpose

Security Audit

Identify vulnerabilities, insecure code, and potential breaches

Code Quality Audit

Assess maintainability, readability, and design

License/Compliance Audit

Verify usage of open-source or proprietary software

Performance Audit

Detect performance bottlenecks and inefficiencies

Architecture Audit

Evaluate scalability, modularity, and system design

DevOps Audit

Examine CI/CD, release processes, and automation

Regulatory Audit

Ensure compliance with industry or legal standards

Often, organizations combine several of these in a single comprehensive review, especially during digital transformation or platform consolidation initiatives.

Final Thoughts

A software or code audit isn’t just a technical exercise—it’s a strategic investment. It uncovers hidden risks, improves system performance, and enhances confidence in your technology, whether you’re scaling up, pursuing funding, or just looking to innovate more responsibly. While internal reviews are useful for ongoing maintenance, proactively bringing in an external partner provides the credibility, expertise, and objectivity needed to make bold decisions or satisfy stakeholders. In a fast-moving tech world, the cost of not knowing what’s under the hood can be far greater than the cost of an audit.

The post A Business Executive’s Guide to Custom Software Vendors first appeared on STEP Software.

Whether a corporate strategic plan is driving your search for a custom software vendor, or your legacy system needs life support, finding a vendor that aligns with your vision and budget does not have to be an arduous task.

Often when business executives begin researching custom software vendors, they’re looking for partners who can deliver value, minimize risk, and support long-term growth. But software vendors often speak a different language and being able to cut through the jargon is critical to project success.

After 20 years in business, supporting some of the world greatest IT teams, we have compiled a guide, including some key questions designed to help executives with the decision-making process.

Questions and Considerations:

Proven Expertise & Industry Experience

Alignment is essential:

Has this vendor worked with companies in our industry?

Do they understand our business model, regulations, and pain points?

Why it matters:

Industry experience means faster ramp-up times, fewer communication gaps, and a higher chance of success. Executives often search for case studies, client lists, or domain-specific certifications.

Portfolio and References

Visible proof of success:

What projects has this vendor completed?

Are there testimonials or client references?

Do they have experience with similar challenges?

Why it matters:

Seeing a strong track record reassures decision-makers that the vendor can handle complexity and deliver results.

Technical Capability & Scalability

Determining the right technical fit is critical:

Can the vendor build scalable, secure, and performant software?

Do they have expertise in relevant tech stacks (e.g., C/C++, .NET, Java, Python, PHP, mobile, cloud, APIs, etc.)?

Can they handle both legacy integrations and modern platforms?

Why it matters:

The wrong technical fit leads to rework, instability, or project failure. Executives often want vendors that can flex as their needs evolve.

Project Management & Communication

Key concerns include:

How will the project be managed? Agile? Waterfall? Hybrid?

Can we as a client manage the project?

Will there be a dedicated point of contact?

Is the vendor responsive, transparent, and easy to work with?

Why it matters:

Even great code is meaningless if a project isn’t delivered on time, on budget, and with clear communication.

Cost and Value

Understanding the price and the hidden costs:

What is the total cost of ownership (TCO)?

Does the vendor deliver ROI through efficiency, automation, or competitive advantage?

Is their pricing models clear and fair (fixed bid, hourly, retainer)?

Why it matters:

They need confidence that the investment will pay off and not spiral into hidden costs or extended timelines.

Contracting

Understanding the nuances of software specific contracting:

Is the contracting process straightforward?

What are their term lengths and types?

Will the vendor sign an NDA?

Code ownership, what are the options?

Why it matters:

Executives need confidence that there are mutual protections in place.

Support, Maintenance, and Long-Term Partnership

They ask:

What happens after launch?

Do you offer ongoing support, updates, and maintenance?

Are you equipped to grow with us long-term?

Why it matters:

our software is a major part of your business, you need a reliable partner for the long haul.

Security & Compliance

For regulated industries especially, questions include:

How do you handle data security?

Are you compliant with HIPAA, GDPR, PCI, etc.?

Why it matters:

One security misstep can damage reputation, cause legal trouble, or shut down operations.

Innovation & Strategic Thinking

Forward-thinking execs want to know:

Will this vendor bring ideas, not just execution?

Can they advise us on technology trends or process improvements?

Why it matters:

Nontechnical executives, are often seeking insight—not just coding—especially when custom software supports digital transformation efforts.

Final Thought:

Executives don’t just want code. They want confidence. They’re searching for a vendor they can trust—one that understands their business, delivers results, and grows with them. Custom software isn’t just a technical challenge—it’s a business-critical investment, and the right vendor can make or break its success.
The post CIO & CTO Strategic Concerns: June 2025 first appeared on STEP Software.

As summer 2025 approaches tech execs and boards are discussing strategic initiatives for 2026 and beyond. As CIOs and CTOs navigate the complex strategic concerns of 2025 it is shaping the changes needed for Q3 and Q4 of this year and subsequent quarters to follow. The rapid technological change, economic pressure, regulatory scrutiny, and growing demands for agility and innovation are only increasing the optics on technical strategic initiatives.

We’ve created a detailed summary of the concerns we are finding in our research as well as what our Advisory Division clients are concerned about — and how they are responding.

*This blog is acronym heavy, and we all know how unique these can be from industry to industry, so we’ve created a glossary of terms at the bottom of the blog to reduce confusion for our readers. We have also done this in the past to help clients understand AI lingo.

1. Balancing Innovation with Technical Debt

Concern:

Legacy systems and outdated infrastructure are stifling innovation and agility.

Response:

Modernization roadmaps to refactor or re-platform legacy apps.

API-first strategies to integrate legacy with modern systems.

Selective cloud migration with a focus on ROI and business case.

2. Managing AI Risks While Capitalizing on Value

Concern:

Generative AI is a competitive advantage—but also a governance minefield.

Response:

4. Complex IT Ecosystems and Vendor Sprawl

Concern:

Too many tools, platforms, and vendors lead to cost, complexity, and security gaps.

Response:

Conclusion

Navigating the complex business concerns of 2025 amid the mountain of technological change, unyielding economic pressure, and the growing demand for innovation all while ensuring businesses remain competitive is keeping IT executives up at night. These concerns are making their way to boardrooms and non-IT executive offices as well, setting the tone for 2026 strategic planning and late 2025 course correcting. Leaner budgets, AI adoption, legacy systems, cybersecurity and regulatory compliance continue as top stressors from previous years with no sign of letting up anytime soon. Collaboration between departments, clear communication of goals and interdepartmental plans as well as accessing tech agnostic subject matter experts, like our Advisory Division, are key components to decreasing corporate stress while ensuring strategic initiatives stay on track.

Time to Stability is how we measure success at STEP. It’s our gold standard promise to our clients, it’s how quickly you stop worrying. Others may use a cheeky marketing term, offer bloated promises or fake metrics, but at STEP we use the tools that lead to success.

For over 20 years CIO’s, CTO’s and IT leaders have reached out to us when they are in a state of chaos. Issues like a COBOL system not integrating with newer software, or a team about to blow a timeline on a critical software project. They call us with their frustrations around operational inefficiencies and problems with scalability. They call us when they need stability, now. Stability at speed is what we have been giving our clients for two decades.

Time to Stability is our proprietary benchmark for moving a business from downtime risk to dependability.

Collecting customer support feedback of bottlenecks, failures, and unexplained issues to determine a root cause and action plan to resolve

Deep dive in the code (code audit) to ensure a common pipeline of code for core features and a removal of copy-and-paste procedures

Monitoring of servers to evaluate and assess initial resource and performance wins, including code changes, services adjustments or hardware adjustments where applicable

Hotfixes of codebase to address low hanging issues with regression testing

Deployment of the hotfix, now stabilized on applicable fronts

Most clients reach their initial Time to Stability within the first 4 weeks of onboarding. After that it is a continuous process of 4 week increments until the software is at the level of reliability the business expects of it.

TTS applies to all our clients, whether they are a Staff Augmentation client in need of a VB.NET developer, or they are a CTO seeking advice on how to solve a mission critical problem with their legacy software system.

Last year our end of year message highlighted tech trends that we’d been keeping an eye on; this year we continue to keep track of what’s important in our industry.

It’s been a year of many repeated trends as well as several very exciting newcomers. Let’s have look at what we’ve been monitoring:

AI continues to be the biggest trend as business leaders embrace its power to increase productivity, customer experience and profitability.

Cybersecurity and the rising frequency of cyberattacks highlighted the need for stronger preventative measures and more innovative ways of proactively addressing this ever-present threat. Companies are focusing more on the need to prioritize it within all new tech hitting the market.

IoT and its expansion into enterprise and the increase of public adoption is a trend that continues to excite our team.

Quantum Computing, while this buzzword first hit the market in the 80’s it is only now that computing technology is moving it forward with real world application potential. Quantum computing is poised to have game changing impacts in life sciences, financial markets, and even the electric vehicle industry. We are keeping a close eye on this and how it will change business.

FemTech, a relative newcomer in the tech space has grown 700% in just five years, powered primarily by software innovation. Consumers and healthcare providers are embracing the benefits of this new vertical to help better diagnose, treat and evaluate a massively underserved population.

Wearable Tech, its more than a watch now. Smarter wearables emerged, including rings, socks, and even yoga pants. These super cool pieces of tech hammer home the need for stronger cybersecurity technology.

Software developer shortages continue to plague businesses post pandemic. Even with hybrid work environments and global access to talent, businesses are consistently having to pivot as they struggle to staff teams in a booming digital economy.

Legacy technology, we’ve all heard the term; its what business are built on. But aging technology and the need to carry it forward while executing fiscally responsible strategic plans is nothing short of a herculean effort. Effectively managing business needs while strategic modernization and digitization occurs is a trend this year that we’ve been hearing a lot about from our clients, and one we don’t take lightly.

Keeping our finger on the pulse of these trends is exciting and something we will continue to do for our clients and with our team. The trust our clients place in us to deliver tailored, transformative software solutions is a privilege we never take for granted, and collaborating with them again this year has been our honour.

Looking Ahead to 2025

While we’re not ready to share all the details just yet, we’re working behind the scenes on an exciting new technology that will reshape how businesses think about security and connectivity. Stay tuned, 2025 promises to be a game-changer!

As technology evolves, the future holds immense promise. Our team of brilliant developers and tech experts will continue to embrace change, push boundaries, and deliver solutions that matter.

To our clients, staff, and the STEP Software community — thank you for being part of our journey this year. Your support fuels our passion for innovation, and we can’t wait to see what 2025 brings.

Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and exciting year ahead!

Cheers to 2025!

It’s a Quinnification!

What’s a Quinnification? It's a neologism of course - a new word or expression which, in recent decades, has become more common in the tech space. Much like the terms webinar (web seminar), malware (malicious software), hydra code (a difficult to fix bug), or rubberducking (a method used to debug) these industrial colloquialisms didn’t exist until there was a need for them. Enter Quinnification - the creative and bold unification of STEP Software under the watchful, clever eye of our mascot, Quinn.

The post What the fox is going on at STEP Software? first appeared on STEP Software.

We know what you’re thinking: it’s a bunch of marketing nonsense. But this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Back in 2019, we embarked on a mission to rebrand our company, which included launching our sassy mascot, Quinn. We embraced his fox-like qualities of being clever, bold, and creative in every decision we made, every client we collaborated with, and every project we became part of. We developed a plan that included a new website, the launch of an exciting new product, and a round of hiring to formalise our HR, Sales, and Marketing efforts. But, like many businesses, Q1 of 2020 changed all of that.

The impact of the pandemic on industry varied greatly, but for the software and IT sector, it was our chance to shine. At STEP, we didn’t even think twice about shifting our focus from rebranding to supporting our clients’ needs. We are passionate about software, but we are also myopically focused on our clients’ goals. Whether it was updating workforce management systems or supporting our insurance clients’ digitalization efforts or building new software for propane dispensing kiosks, it was full steam ahead, ensuring they had the software they needed to stay productive. While businesses transitioned from in-person, to remote, to hybrid, software solutions were put to the test and quickly became an essential tool keeping the world open for business.

As the rollercoaster ride of the pandemic started to slow down in 2023, and business returned to a more familiar rate, we eagerly resumed the Quinnification of STEP Software. We’ve been working hard, improving our online presence, and it is with great pleasure we announce the first of many Quinn-approved changes here at STEP: our new website.

Why a new website?

First things first, our old site didn’t represent us anymore. We’ve changed a lot since our last release back in 2017, and it was time to modernize. Unlike most new websites in 2023, ours is filled with a myriad of information related to software. We have rewritten all the content, updated all the images (many the result of our super talented in-house graphic design team), and even switched platforms to improve performance. It’s software simplified with a heavy dose of our nerdy personality.

We know that no two companies take the same journey with software because no two companies are the same. It is one of the many reasons we are proud to launch a website that is all about educating you about what software is, how it works and what it can do for you. It’s a site filled with a lot of clever information that will help you make educated business decisions related to software. We know it’s a bold move to produce a website that is not all marketing, but it’s synonymous with how we do things at STEP. We are a different type of tech company, one that puts passions ahead of profits. A software company built on the foundations of curiosity, collaboration, innovation, and experience.

What’s up next?

Early in the new year, we will be releasing the next part of our Quinnification plan. We’ve talked about it a bit in a few of our blog posts this year; it’s an exciting new middleware technology just for developers. StringNetwork is a game-changer. It’s about the lessons we’ve learned and the limits of technology. StringN (as we like to call it) is a revolutionary way for developers to bridge the gap between disparate technology and a secure, simple-to-use networking protocol. Call it a passion project, call it coding for the greater good, call it whatever you want. We call it revolutionary.

In the meantime, please check out our new site and feel free to drop us a line if you’d like to chat about your software goals.

The post What the fox is going on at STEP Software? first appeared on STEP Software.
